Beschreibung |
Foomatic is a printer database designed to make it easier to set up common printers for use with Debian (and other operating systems). It provides the "glue" between a print spooler (like CUPS or lpr) and your actual printer, by telling your computer how to process files sent to the printer. This package is not necessary for most users and takes up a substantial amount of disk space. Instead, you can use the "foomatic-configure" script in foomatic-db-engine, the "foomatic-gui" package, or the web interface for getting a particular PPD file at http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi . An additional driver to convert PostScript or PDFs to your printer's native language may be necessary to print with the specific PPD file for your printer. Gutenprint drivers require "ijsgutenprint" to be installed; some low-end printers will need "foo2zjs". Most necessary drivers are now included in Ghostscript, which is a dependency of this package. . This package *does not* provide manufacturer-supported PPD files for PostScript printers; those are included in the "openprinting-ppds" package. Also, PPD files using the HPIJS drivers (often the best choice for HP DeskJet and OfficeJet printers) are supplied in the "hpijs-ppds" package. . These PPD files are based on foomatic-db version 20090616-1 and foomatic-db-gutenprint version 5.2.4-1.
